What we mean when we say automation03

The word is tired. The job is not

The word automation is tired. It has been asked to mean a chatbot, a generated blog, and a miracle. Inside a company it usually means something smaller and more valuable: a person stops copying the same field between two tools.

Start with a map, not a model

We start with a map, not a model. Which steps are rules (if the invoice is paid, mark the deal)? Which steps need judgment (is this customer angry)? Rules belong in n8n, a tool that moves data between apps you already pay for, or whatever backbone you already trust. Judgment can borrow a model, with a person still sending the message.

A flow without a log is a rumour. A flow whose passwords live in one laptop is a risk.

The first flow should be ugly

A useful first flow is often ugly. New form to CRM to a Slack line to the owner of that region. No slide. No agent personality. When that runs for two weeks without a missed row, we talk about drafts and summaries. The order matters. People who skip it spend the next quarter debugging theatre.

Where agents earn a place

Agents earn a place where the output is cheap to check. A recap of yesterday’s tickets. A first pass at a product description you will edit. A classification of incoming mail into two piles. They do not earn a place where the output moves money, legal text, or a patient’s record without a stop.

Ownership is the part vendors skip

Ownership is the part vendors skip. A flow without a log is a rumour. A flow whose passwords live in one laptop is a risk. We leave the credentials in a vault, the diagram in a place the team can open, and the name of the person who is allowed to turn it off.

Fourteen hours is not magic

If you want a number: the operations desk we describe in our work returned fourteen hours a week. That is not magic. That is a close process that used to live in one person’s head, written down, then run by a system that stops when a check fails. The person still owns the exception. They just no longer own the copying.
